A 12-storey building under construction collapsed in Nairobi, Kenya, on Friday, October 23, prompting an emergency rescue operation amid fears that several people were trapped beneath the rubble.
The building collapsed along 9th Street in the Eastleigh neighbourhood at around 1:40 p.m. local time, sending concrete slabs crashing to the ground and forcing pedestrians to flee.
Emergency responders, police officers and Kenya Red Cross personnel rushed to the scene to assist with search-and-rescue efforts, while excavators were deployed to clear the debris.
Kenya’s Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, later confirmed that one person had been rescued as the search continued for others who might have been trapped beneath the rubble.
